xPression Enterprise Edition's service-oriented architecture sets the bar for dynamic content publishing technology available today. Based on standards like Java EE, XML, Web Services, JMS, and MS .Net, xPression provides a comprehensive set of components for document design, assembly, composition, output processing and delivery. These components are organized in a layered architecture, as shown in the diagram below. The server components are enabled to be integrated within an Enterprise Content Management (ECM) infrastructure.

xPression Enterprise Edition takes advantage of best-for-purpose document design tools powered by EMC Document Sciences xPresso® plug-in technology.
xPresso for Adobe InDesign is a plug-in for Windows and Mac that extends InDesign’s capabilities to support rapid design, testing and publishing of highly graphical communications, such as statements, financial reports, marketing collateral, catalogs and other frame-based documents.
xPresso for Word is a plug-in for Microsoft Word 2007 that leverages the features of Word to transform existing static document designs into highly personalized customer communications right from the desktop, including proposals, contracts, invoices and correspondence.
xPresso for Dreamweaver is a plug-in for Adobe Dreamweaver that enables the creation of personalized rich HTML email communications in high-volumes, as well as high-concurrency personalized Web page generation, providing a seamless customer experience across multiple channels.
xDesign is a fat-client design tool that integrates xPresso for InDesign, xPresso for Word, and Microsoft Word for creating compound documents that contain content in a variety of layouts and formats, such as benefits booklets, financial contracts, welcome kits, insurance policies, and other complex documents.
End User Applications
xResponse is a thin-client application that allows you to generate fully compliant customer correspondence in real-time, supporting controlled and ad-hoc editing of correspondence and an approval workflow.
xRevise is a thin-client application for the swift generation and revision of custom contracts through the contract negotiation cycle, integrating Microsoft Word and providing a searchable library of custom content items as well as a complete revision control system.
xPRS server
The server comprises two sets of components: publishing components and infrastructure components. The publishing components include:
- xAssemble is a robust rules engine that executes business logic for selecting content and images based on customer data to quickly create customized documents.
- xPublish is the most sophisticated document composition engine available, composing and formatting documents created by xAssemble and producing a large set of electronic and print output formats, including PDF, HTML, AFP, PostScript, PCL, and plain text.
- xBatch is the fastest engine available for running high-volume, unattended batch document production processes.
The infrastructure components provides services for security, load balancing, data access from a variety of sources, content access from ECM systems, the file system or other sources.
xFramework is a published API available through both a COM and Java interface, providing a complete Web Services toolkit for integration.
Administration Tools
xAdmin is a Web application that allows System Administrators to easily administer and configure an xPression infrastructure that is right for any business.
xDashboard provides at-a-glance reports and drill down capabilities to easily manage batch jobs, view job and server statistics, monitor job history and much more, all in a Web-based management console.
